One of our favorite guests is back for a third time: Endurance training and holistic health supremo Doctor Phil Maffetone.

Well-known for working with six-time Ironman triathlon world champion Mark Allen, renaissance man Dr. Phil has been just about everywhere and done just about everything including helping musicians like James Taylor, Johnny Cash and the Red Hot Chili Peppers stay healthy on tour.

He’s founder of the Maximum Aerobic Function Method, known as MAF – probably the most effective approach I’ve seen to prevent over-training and to fix broken athletes. He’s also a leading pioneer of low-carb, relatively high fat real food diets for athletes.

This week we have one of world’s leading experts on human performance and exercise physiology. Dr Michael Joyner is with us to talk about endurance training, muscle growth, recovery, you name it. He’s based at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, researching among many topics blood flow during exercise, glucose regulation and the physiology of elite athletes.

Dr. Joyner is a keen sportsman himself, particularly triathlon and can quite possibly lay claim to being the fastest ever marathoner on a height-adjusted basis. Measuring 6’4″, he posted a personal best of 2:25 hours.

The Ironman World Championship. Every year it happens on the second Saturday in October in Kona, Hawaii.

It’s been exactly 25 years since the most dramatic race so far took place. A duel lasting 8 hours 9 minutes and fourteen seconds between Mark Allen and Dave Scott.

We’re honored to have that day’s victor with us on the show. That’s Mark Allen. He’s now a coach, a mentor and guide in the fields of triathlon, endurance sports in general and in the art of living. He’s also recently produced an inspiring book called The Art of Competition – a series of 90 quotations illustrated with stunning scenes of nature.

Just in time for the summer splashing season in the northern hemisphere, week we have swimming and triathlon coach Paul Newsome. I’m very excited about this interview because it’s the first time we get to talk about sharks on the show.

Based in Perth, Australia, Paul is the director of Swim Smooth, a teaching and coaching academy strong on bio mechanics and the finer points of the freestyle stroke – from short course races up to ultra marathon type events, including Ironman triathlons. And Paul certainly practices what he preaches – he is the 2013 winner of the race around Manhattan Island – also known as New York City – a 28.5 mile feat that he accomplished in 7 hours and 14 minutes.

For our loyal listeners based in England, it’s worth pointing out the Paul grew up in Yorkshire and studied Sport Science at the University of Bath.

Ultra Runner & Triple Ironman Champion Christopher Bergland on Sporting Obsessions

Christopher Bergland ran 153.76 miles in 24 hours on a treadmill and lived to tell about it – just barely. That’s an average per mile pace of 6 minutes and 24 seconds for an entire day and night – a world record that’s held up for nearly a decade.

Christopher has also won three different triple Ironman triathlon competitions, including one in a record-breaking 38 hours and 46 minutes.

Now he’s a thinker, a writer and an ultra-endurance athlete in recovery. A fascinating person, Christopher now looks closely at what makes us happy, how to stay healthy and what place sports and exercise can and should play in our lives.

Christopher is the author of the book The Athlete’s Way: Sweat and the Biology of Bliss and writes a regular blog column of the same name for Psychology Today.

Bob is a specialist in sports dietetics, an exercise physiologist, a strength and conditioning coach, and a USA Triathlon certified elite, youth, and junior coach as well as a competitive endurance athlete himself, including marathons, ultra-marathons and both short and long course triathlon races.

Bob was the director of sports nutrition at the University of Florida and the sport dietitian for the U.S. team at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
