Rio Focus: USA Cycling Leader Jim Miller on Winning Gold Medals (Re-broadcast)

Renewing USA Cycling (Re-broadcast)
Jim_Miller_Kistin+ArmstrongUSA Cycling is in focus this time around. Jim Miller is USA Cycling’s Team Leader and Vice President of Athletics.

Jim coached Kristin Armstrong to gold medals in Beijing and in London, where she was almost 38 years old at the time; quite an achievement. By the way, Kristin is not related in any way to Lance Armstrong.

Jim has also been instrumental in developing two rising stars in men’s endurance cycling – Ben King, and Tejay van Garderen, who won the young rider title at the 2012 Tour de France – that’s the first time an American rider has won the coveted white jersey in 25 years.

vaughters_5
Into the world of big time professional cycling this week with one of the key leaders in the field, especially when it comes to anti doping – we have Cannondale Garmin boss Jonathan Vaughters. This is a free flowing and wide-ranging interview, covering everything from the athlete-to-coach transition, the complexities of managing a team that operates simultaneously on several continents, to talent identification and more.

The Cannondale Sharp Team is one the youngest in the peloton but includes standouts Dan Martin, Ryder Hesjedal, and Andrew Talansky, all three of whom have reached the podium in numerous major races over the past three seasons.

Jonathan hit the peak of his riding career as a lieutenant on Lance Armstrong’s U.S. Postal Service Team that won the Tour de France in 1999. He went on to ride for the Credit Agricole team from 2000 to 2002. Three years later he launched, with the help of business partners, Slipstream Sports, the management company that has had a top-tier international team ever since.

Sports Scientist Ross Tucker: Pushing the Limits of Human Performance

human performance sports-scientist-ross-tucker-tim-noakes-central-governor
Serious but fun sports science geekery this week. We’re delighted to have exercise physiologist Ross Tucker joining us from the University of Cape Town and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.

Ross is a close colleague of Professor Tim Noake’s and has been building on his research into pacing in high-intensity endurance sports, what is often referred to as anticipatory regulation and the Central Governor Model. Ross’s PhD looked at fatigue and the limits of human performance.

In addition to doing extensive research in the limits of human performance, particularly in cycling and running, Ross is a consultant to the South Africa Rugby Sevens Team and a wide range of other top international sports. You can find numerous interesting articles on his website: sportsscientists.com.

Tour de France Rider Tyler Hamilton on Coaching and Life After Lance

Cycling, Lance Armstrong, Doping
tyler_hamilton2

This week cyclist Tyler Hamilton joins us on Sports Coach Radio. Once Lance Armstrong’s most-trusted lieutenant, Tyler went on to become one of his biggest rivals and then one of his most devastating adversaries.

Tyler has experienced the greatest highest and deepest lows in professional cycling: a Tour de France stage victory, an Olympic Gold medal and huge winnings. And then suspended twice for using illegal drugs, stripped of titles and shunned by his peers. He was one of the first riders of his generation to be punished for cheating, but certainly not the last.

Sports Coach Radio is hosted by Glenn Whitney, a coaching and leadership psychologist. You can follow us on Twitter, where we post useful articles and coaching tips just about every day of the week. The handle is @sportscoachtalk. And we’d be grateful if you’d leave a short review of the show on the Apple iTunes page.

Tyler is now coaching mostly amateur riders via his company Tyler Hamilton Training. We caught up with him recently over the telephone from his base in Missoula, Montana.
